Iran’s Defense Might Has Nothing to Do with JCPOA: Envoy
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s ambassador to Paris said the 2015 nuclear agreement between Tehran and world powers only addresses issues pertaining to Tehran’s nuclear activities, stressing that the country’s defense capabilities have nothing to do with it.
“The JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) is a multilateral and international deal endorsed by the United Nations Security Council Resolution (2231) and cannot be altered,” Abolqasem Delfi told a conference in Paris on Tuesday.
Stressing that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has eight times confirmed Iran’s compliance with the JCPOA, he added that striking of the international deal proved the rightfulness of Iran’s nuclear program to the world.
The Iranian envoy further said that the JCPOA solely addresses nuclear issues and that the country’s “other files” are not related to it.
“If Europe or others have concerns or questions about the Islamic Republic of Iran’s foreign policy regarding the Middle East or its defense capabilities, (they should be aware that) they are two separate things and have nothing to do with the JCPOA,” he went on to say.
Iran has always stressed that its military power and test of missiles are an issue relating to defense of its territorial integrity and has nothing to do with the nuclear deal.
Iran has also underscored frequently that its military might poses no threat to other countries and that the Islamic Republic’s defense doctrine is entirely based on deterrence.
