Iran’s President Sympathizes with Italy over Fatal Bridge Collapse

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani sent a letter to his Italian counterpart, offering condolences over the deaths and injuries caused by the collapse of a giant motorway bridge in Genoa.

In a letter to Italy’s President Sergio Mattarella on Thursday, President Rouhani said he was deeply saddened by the news of deaths of Italians in the collapse of the Morandi bridge in the city of Genoa.

He also voiced Iran’s condolences to the Italian nation and government and families of victims of the deadly incident.

Italian officials say 39 people were killed when dozens of vehicles fell 45m (148ft) from the Morandi bridge during torrential rain on Tuesday.

There will be a national day of mourning on Saturday to coincide with the funerals of victims.

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has declared a 12-month state of emergency in the Liguria region in response.
