Over 24 Million Yemenis in Need of Humanitarian Assistance: WHO

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Over 24 million people in war-torn Yemen remain in desperate need of humanitarian aid, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

"While Yemen is facing the worst humanitarian crisis in the world, the situation is getting worse year by year," the WHO said in a tweet on Thursday.

The World Health Organization also asserted that an estimated 24.4 million Yemenis, roughly 80% of Yemen’s total population, will still be in need of humanitarian assistance.

Since March 2015, Saudi Arabia and some of its Arab allies have been carrying out deadly airstrikes against the Houthi Ansarullah movement in an attempt to restore power to fugitive former president Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh.

The conflict has destroyed much of Yemen’s basic infrastructure, including water and sanitation systems, prompting the UN to describe the situation as one of “the worst humanitarian disasters of modern times”.

The Yemeni Ministry of Human Rights announced in a statement on March 25 that the war had left 600,000 civilians dead and injured until then. The war and the accompanying blockade have also caused famine across Yemen.
