Official Dismisses Concerns over US Sanctions on Iran’s Metals Industry

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – An Iranian deputy minister dismissed concerns about the latest US sanctions targeting the country’s export of industrial metals, saying high-quality Iranian products have their own international customers.

Deputy Industry Minister Jafar Sarqini said there is not much concern over the fresh US sanctions, because Iranian-made steel, copper and aluminum have their own customers.

It is unlikely that the sanctions imposed by US President Donald Trump will significantly affect Iran’s metals industry, he said, adding that he saw no reason for concern due to the excellent quality of Iranian metals which meet international standards.

“The volume of exports in the country’s metals industry not only did not decline over the past year after the US withdrawal from the JCPOA, but it even increased compared to the corresponding period a year earlier,” he said.

On May 8, Trump imposed new sanctions targeting Iran’s revenue from export of industrial metals, including iron, steel, aluminum, and copper sectors.

In a subsequent statement, Iran’s Foreign Ministry said the US regime’s decision runs counter to Washington’s international commitments and that the US must bear international responsibility for such conduct.

“These sanctions, like other unilateral US sanctions, are in contravention of the basic principles and rules of international relations, and specifically in contravention of the international commitments under the UN Charter, the Algeria Declaration, the Treaty of Amity, and the International Court of Justice’s ruling,” Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abbas Mousavi said, adding that the onus is on the US to compensate for the damages caused by the fresh sanctions.
