TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Former Belgium and Ivory Coast coach Marc Wilmots was appointed Iran national football team new head coach.

Football Federation of Islamic Republic of Iran (FFIRI) President Mehdi Taj confirmed that Wilmots will lead Iran until the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Wilmots has been appointed Team Melli new head coach for an annual salary of $ 1,500,000, as well as two Belgian assistants.

The Belgian coach will be reportedly assisted by an Iranian coach, namely Javad Nekounam.

He led Belgium to the 2014 World Cup and Euro 2016, but was sacked after that tournament in France.

Wilmots, whose last job was in charge of Ivory Coast in 2017, arrived in Tehran, capital of Iran, early Wednesday to finalize his contract.

Iran has been without a coach since Carlos Queiroz left to take over as Colombia coach after Team Melli’s AFC Asian Cup 2019 campaign in the United Arab Emirates in January.

Under guidance of the Portuguese coach, Iran lost to Japan 3-0 in the Asian Cup semi-finals.

Team Melli is preparing for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers that will begin in the second half of this year.
