Larijani Congratulates Iranians on Winning IWF Junior World Championships

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani offered his congratulations to the Iranian nation over the recent winning of the 2019 IWF Junior World Championships held in Suva, Fiji.

“The brilliance of (Iran’s) young, steely men in the global arena, which was achieved for the fourth time in a row, reflects their faith and firm determination to bring honor to our country,” Larijani said in a message released on Sunday.

He further congratulated the “noble nation of Iran and the champions, coaches,” and their families on the championship.

Larijani also expressed hope that the country would witness the continuation of the youths’ successes in international competitions.

The competition concluded on Saturday with the men’s +102kg session with several Youth World Records taken by Iranian athlete Alireza Yousefi.

Varazdat Lalayan won the overall gold and became the tenth Armenian in the heavyweight category to win the World Champion title (419kg).

In the Snatch, Ali Davoudi from Iran cut ahead of Lalayan and stole the gold medal from him with a 193kg lift. Yousefi was fourth in this lift, but set new Youth World Records twice, first at 163kg, which he immediately bettered to 171kg.

The Armenian lifter bested the rest in the Clean and Jerk (227kg), jumping on the top of the Total scoreboard, having a final result of 419kg, one kilogram more than Davoudi, who won the gold medal last year.

The 15-year-old Iranian who is already a Youth Olympic champion pinched the Clean and Jerk silver medal, setting other 4 new World Records along the way. Going from 212kg to 225kg, he finally settled the YWR at 396kg.

The Iranian team won the title in the Men’s Team Classification with 622 points.

USA finished second with 552 points, and Japan stood third with 521.

The competition brought 235 athletes together, 105 women and 130 men from 41 countries.
