TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Syrian army forces continued its battle against terrorist groups in Idlib and Hama provinces as military units took full control of the key northwestern town of Khan Sheikhoun on Wednesday.

Syrian forces took full control of the town of Khan Sheikhoun and are currently carrying out clearing operation to rid the town of mines that were left by militants, france24 reported citing Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The report also indicated that the army-backed forces have surrounded an area stretching from the south of Khan Sheikhun into northern Hama province, cutting off all roads out for Turkish military forces present in the nearby town of Morek.

Following their new advances in inter-provincial regions between Idlib and Hama the Syrian army also advanced into villages near the town of Al-Tamanah in the countryside of Hama province on Wednesday.

The significant advance came after days of heavy fighting against militant groups in the Idlib region such as the Al-Qaeda affiliate Hayat Tahrir al-Sham terrorist group who has been controling the region since January, according to reports.

The Syrian forces have been advancing over the past few days in a bid to encircle Khan Shaykhun from the north and west and to seize a key highway.

The road runs through Idlib, connecting Damascus with the northern city of Aleppo, which the army took back from terrorist groups in December 2016.

On August 5, the Syrian army declared in a statement the start of an offensive against foreign-sponsored militants in Idlib after those positioned in the de-escalation zone failed to honor a ceasefire brokered by Russia and Turkey and continued to target civilian neighborhoods.
