Iran’s Hassan Yazdani Claims Gold at World Wrestling Championships

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Olympic gold medalist Hassan Yazdani won a gold medal at the 2019 World Wrestling Championships on Sunday.

Indian Deepak Punia, who was set to compete in the final of 86kg in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, was forced to miss the title clash due to injuries.

Yazdani defeated Puerto Rican wrestler Jaime Espinal (10-0), Hungarian István Veréb (9-2), Artur Naifonov from Russia (4-2) and American Myles Amine (11-0) on his way to the final match.

Iranian freestyle wrestler Alireza Karimi also won a silver medal at the 92kg class and Younes Emami took a bronze at the 70kg.

The 2019 World Wrestling Championships were held in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan from September 14 to 22.

The tournament also served as qualification for the 2020 Summer Olympics and the top six wrestlers from each category earned their NOCs a qualification.
