US Oil Deal with Militants in Syria Akin to Piracy: American Author

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Dean Henderson, an author and geopolitical analyst from Missouri, said a recent deal between an American firm and Kurdish-led militants from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to develop and export the Arab country’s crude is akin to piracy.

“This deal is akin to a pirate stealing a ship then hiring a contractor to ‘modernize’ it. This oil belongs to the Syrian people and not to an American multinational and their CIA-backed henchman,” Henderson told Tasnim in an interview.

Dean Henderson earned a BLS (Bachelor of Liberal Studies) from the University of South Dakota and an MS in Environmental Studies from the University of Montana. He founded/published/edited one of America’s first political “zines”, The Missoula Paper، in 1990 in Missoula where he was also a regular columnist for the Montana Kaimin. Following is the full text of the interview:

Tasnim: Recently, an American oil company and Kurdish-led militants from the SDF who control northeastern oilfields signed a deal to “modernize the oil fields in northeastern Syria”. What is your take on the agreement?

Henderson: This deal is akin to a pirate stealing a ship then hiring a contractor to "modernize" it. This oil belongs to the Syrian people and not to an American multinational and their CIA-backed henchman.

Tasnim: Syria’s foreign ministry described the deal as an illegal one aimed at stealing the Arab country’s crude. “This agreement is null and void and has no legal basis،” it said. What do you think?

Henderson: The foreign ministry is obviously correct and one would hope that the United Nations, Arab League or other international organizations would raise a red flag and call this move what it is - the theft of Syrian oil by the imperialist West.

Tasnim: US President Donald Trump has said that despite a military pullback from northeast Syria، a small number of American forces would remain “where they have oil”. He expects the United States to benefit by millions of dollars per month from Syria's oil revenues. Why do you think the US government reserves the right for itself to take the Arab country’s oil without Damascus permission? Isn’t it pillage? Why do you think the international community and organizations have remained silent about this?

Henderson: Foreign policy by theft has been a pillar of US "diplomacy" since the Monroe Doctrine and can be traced back to the Crusades of the Holy Roman Empire and even the imperatives of the pharaohs. Might is right has unfortunately been the modus operandi on this earth for thousands of years. The international organizations are beholden to these powerful interests, so the best Syria can do is to continue to drive the neocolonialists from their land by force.
