Iran Vows Decisive Action against Insecurity at Border with Iraq

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council pledged that any source of threat to the security of Iranian and Iraqi people at the common border will be dealt with decisively.

In a meeting with Defense Minister of Iraq Lt. General Juma Anad Saadoun, held in Tehran on Sunday, Ali Shamkhani emphasized the necessity of maintaining security along the common border with Iraq.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran will take decisive action against any factor of insecurity that may upset the calm of people of the two countries,” the senior Iranian official stressed.  

Hailing the close defense and security cooperation between Tehran and Baghdad in the fight against organized terrorism sponsored by the US and its cohorts in the region and highlighting Iran’s unwavering support for Iraq in liberation of the cities occupied by Daesh terrorists, Shamkhani said, “Such cooperation guarantees regional stability and security, and must be promoted to strategic levels and be institutionalized.”

The top American officials have confessed that the US military presence in the West Asia region has resulted in nothing but wars, instability and destruction of the region’s vital resources, Shamkhani deplored.

He further praised the Iraqi Parliament for passing a bill on the expulsion of American military forces from the Arab country, saying the full withdrawal of US troops is a crucial factor in the establishment of peace and clam in the region.   

For his part, the Iraqi defense minister expressed gratitude to Iran for backing his country in the battle against terrorism, calling for the enhancement of military and security cooperation with the Islamic Republic.

No third country could ever undermine the relations between Baghdad and Tehran, Anad Saadoun said, adding that the experience of joint action against the Daesh terrorists proved that mutual cooperation would help the two countries overcome crises.

The general, who is heading a high-ranking delegation of Iraqi military commander in an official visit to Tehran, has also held meetings with his Iranian counterpart Brigadier General Amir Hatami and Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Hossein Baqeri.
