Envoy: Iran, Turkey Eager to Set Up New Rail Connection
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran and Turkey are willing to create a new railroad line as Afghanistan has gained access to the rail route that passes through the Islamic Republic, the Iranian ambassador to Ankara said.
In a post on his Twitter, Iran's Ambassador to Ankara Mohammad Farazmand said he has held a meeting with Director General of Turkish State Railways Ali Ihsan Uygun for talks about Tehran-Ankara relations, the regional issues, and the ways to promote railroad cooperation between the two neighbors.
The envoy said while the inauguration of Khaf-Herat railroad has enabled Afghanistan to have access to Turkey through Iran, Tehran and Ankara are willing to set up a new rail connection in Cheshme-Sorayya, the northernmost border location in Iran.
In August, Iranian Minister of Roads and Urban Development Mohammad Eslami said Tehran has put forward a proposal to set up a new railroad line with Turkey.
Stressing the need to enhance the rail transport and links between Iran and Turkey, Eslami said the Razi-Kapikoy border crossing is currently the only railroad connection between the two countries.
Calling for a rise in the number of the rail routes, he said Iran has designated Cheshme-Sorayya station as the connection spot for launching a new railroad line with Turkey and has sent the results of its studies to Ankara.
