Zarif Raps E3 for Inaction to Save JCPOA

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif lashed out at the UK, France and Germany for obeying the US sanctions regime and failing to honor the 2015 nuclear deal.

“E3 leaders—who rely on signature of OFAC functionaries to carry out their obligations under JCPOA—have done ZILCH to maintain JCPOA,” Zarif said in a post on his Twitter account on Sunday, referring to the UK, France and Germany’s obedience to the anti-Iranian sanctions imposed by the US Treasury Department.

He then touched on French President Emmanuel Macron's “stillborn initiative” and the “UK non-payment of court-ordered debt”, making it clear for French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian that the “JCPOA is alive because of Iran and not E3”.

The top Iranian diplomat then told his French counterpart in another tweet, “Dear colleague: You kick-started your cabinet career with arms sales to Saudi war criminals. Avoid absurd nonsense about Iran.”

“Reality check: YOU are destabilizing OUR region. Stop protecting criminals who chainsaw their critics and use YOUR arms to slaughter children in Yemen,” Zarif said about French support for Saudi Arabia.

His comments came after France's foreign minister told the Journal du Dimanche in a Saturday interview that it is "urgent" for the US and Iran to return to the JCPOA.

“This has to stop because Iran and - I say this clearly - is in the process of acquiring nuclear (weapons) capacity," Le Drian said, stressed the importance of negotiating what he called "ballistic proliferation and Iran’s destabilization of its neighbors in the region."
