World Demanding US’ Return to Commitments: Iran’s President

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani highlighted the growing international calls for the US to resume honoring its commitments, saying also that the economic war on Tehran has ended in failure.

Speaking at a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Rouhani said the world is calling on the US with a united voice to return to its commitments.

The president said Iran has always made it clear that it will return to its commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) immediately after the other side fulfills its undertakings.

Pointing to the termination of the previous US administration’s term, Rouhani said, “This year, those who wanted to bring this (Iranian Islamic) Revolution to its knees through terrorism and economic war in the past couple of years are not in power anymore.”

He said the Islamic Republic is going to celebrate the 42nd anniversary of victory of the Revolution while the economic war imposed by the enemy has failed.

The whole world and all politicians, except a corrupt child-murdering regime (Israel) and a few tiny states in the region, urge the US to return to its commitments, Rouhani said.

The JCPOA was signed in 2015 between Iran and six world states —the US, Germany, France, Britain, Russia and China— and was ratified in the form of Resolution 2231.

However, the US under former president Donald Trump unilaterally pulled out of the JCPOA in May 2018 and reinstated the sanctions that had been lifted by the deal.

As the remaining European parties failed to fulfill their end of the bargain and compensate for Washington’s absence, Iran moved in May 2019 to scale back its JCPOA commitments.
