Iran Guardian of West Asia Peace after US Exit: General

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran will be leading efforts to protect peace in the Middle East with the US forces leaving the region humiliatingly, a high-ranking Iranian general said.

“After the withdrawal of the terrorist US forces from the region, Iran will be the guardian of peace in West Asia,” top military adviser to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Major General Yahya Rahim Safavi said on Tuesday.

“The Americans and Europeans must realize the fact that despite their political and economic pressures, Iran has become stronger and will defend its rights,” he said.

The general added that Americans will be booted out of the region in frustration, warning the US that it has to be accountable for the assassination of top Iranian commander Lt. General Qassem Soleimani.

On January 3, 2020, a US drone strike near Baghdad International Airport assassinated General Soleimani, former commander of the Quds Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps. The attack — that also killed Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the second-in-command of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) anti-terror group, along with several others— came while General Soleimani was on an official visit to the Iraqi capital.
