Tehran’s Grand Bazaar Closed Following Sharp Rise in COVID-19 Infections

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Following a dramatic rise in coronavirus infections in recent days, Tehran's Grand Bazaar and many other businesses have been closed for two weeks, according to Head of Tehran Chamber of Guilds.

"The heads of the unions have been informed to close the Tehran market and guild for two weeks, starting from Saturday," Nodeh Farhani said.

He also added the ban on the activity of these guilds is not limited to the big market of Tehran and will be implemented in all areas of the city.

Iranian health officials also urged people to stay at home and stop unnecessary travels. At least 257 cities of Iran's 31 provinces have gone from a low-risk orange level to a coronavirus red warning, 51 cities are in yellow level and only 11 cities in lower-risk blue level.

In cities that are hit with a red level of coronavirus infection, most of high risk jobs and businesses will be closed for two weeks from the time the red status is declared.

Authorities attribute the spike to people defying coronavirus rules for traveling or attending family gatherings during Nowruz, the Persian New Year, which began on March 20 and lasted for two weeks.
