Persian Gulf States Welcome Progress in Iran Nuclear Talks, Envoy Says
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s ambassador to Kuwait said the Persian Gulf countries embrace the closeness of views between Tehran and the Group 4+1 in the course of nuclear talks in Vienna as they have been always concerned about the escalation of tensions between Iran and the US.
In an interview with IRNA on Tuesday, Mohammad Irani said Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif’s recent tour of Qatar, Iraq, Oman and Kuwait concurrent with the nuclear talks in Vienna revealed that Iran’s foreign policy attaches significance to the regional issues.
The Persian Gulf region has a significant place in Iran’s foreign policy doctrine, the ambassador noted, adding, “Because of the political and governmental structures, the Persian Gulf littoral states have held very close relations with the West and the US since the past, that’s why they have been always concerned about a possible escalation of tensions between Iran and the US, and such concerns are still in place.”
“The Persian Gulf littoral countries believe their security is affected by the tensions between Iran and US, so they would naturally welcome the closeness of views between our country (Iran) and the Group 4+1, and ultimately with the Group 5+1,” he added.
Commenting on the recent remarks by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud about the improvement of ties with Iran, the ambassador said the combination of developments send “positive signals of reduction in regional tensions”.
The envoy also pointed to Iran’s constant push for de-escalation in the Persian Gulf region, saying Tehran has always welcomed the settlement of conflicts through negotiations and peaceful manners.
Saudi Arabia is a major and influential country in the region, Irani stated, adding that the continuation of talks would help the regional states face more promising prospects.
