Iran’s Zarif, D-8 New Chief Discuss Closer Cooperation

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif held talks with the new secretary general of the D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation, Ku Jaafar Ku Shaari, about a range of issues, including ways to boost cooperation between Iran and the other member states.

In the meeting, held in Tehran on Wednesday afternoon, Zarif highlighted the importance of the D-8 group and its member states’ potentials and voiced Iran’s readiness to boost cooperation with the countries’ private sectors and exchange experiences in various scientific and technological fields. 

Transfer of technology, cooperation in research and development (R&D), financing economic projects, chamber of barter trade, and cooperation in producing and exporting medicines were among issues discussed at the meeting.

The D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation is an organization for the development of cooperation among the following countries: Iran, Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Turkey.

The objectives of the D-8 are to improve member states’ position in the global economy, diversify and create new opportunities in trade relations, enhance participation in decision-making at international level, and improve standards of living.

The Organization for Economic Cooperation (D-8) is a forum with no adverse impact on bilateral and multilateral commitments of the member countries, emanating from their membership to other international or regional organizations, according to its official website.
