Snapback Mechanism to Go Nowhere, Iranian Official Predicts

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Iranian president's chief of staff said with certainty that the EU3’s push to trigger the so-called snapback provisions of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal will get nowhere, and the issue will not be referred to the UN Security Council either.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a Wednesday session of the cabinet in Tehran, Mahmoud Vaezi said the decision from the three European parties to the nuclear deal –France, the UK and Germany- to trigger the dispute mechanism in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action will end up with a regular meeting of the JCPOA Joint Commission.

“I believe that a (JCPOA Joint Commission) meeting will be held, and the issue will be resolved there, and the subject will by no means go to the (UN) Security Council, nor will the snapback mechanism be implemented,” Vaezi added.

He also slammed the Europeans’ attempts to trigger the dispute mechanism in the nuclear deal as a propagandistic and groundless move, saying it indicates Europe’s weakness and passiveness.

In comments in Indian on Wednesday, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said the move by France, Britain and Germany to trigger the dispute mechanism is legally baseless and politically wrong.

In May 2018, US President Donald Trump pulled his country out of the JCPOA.

Iran and the remaining parties launched talks to save the JCPOA after the US withdrawal, but the three EU parties to the deal have failed to ensure Iran’s economic interests.

The EU’s inaction forced Tehran to stop honoring certain commitments to the nuclear deal.

Iran maintains that the new measures are not designed to harm the JCPOA but to save the accord by creating a balance in the commitments.
