IAEA Chief to Visit Iran on Feb. 20

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Rafael Grossi will travel to Tehran on February 20, Iran’s ambassador to the international organizations in Vienna said.

Kazem Gharibabadi said on Wednesday that the upcoming visit will be made at the request of the UN nuclear watchdog.

Grossi is going to visit Iran for technical talks with the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran about Tehran’s decision to suspend the voluntary implementation of the Additional Protocol of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in accordance with a law ratified by the Iranian Parliament, he added.

The envoy also noted that the IAEA chief and Iranian officials will discuss how to continue cooperation within the framework of new arrangements.

In December, the Iranian Parliament ratified a bill requiring the government to halt voluntary implementation of the NPT if the European signatories to the 2015 nuclear deal keep failing to honor their commitments.

The Foreign Ministry’s spokesman said on Monday that Iran will remain a party to the NPT Safeguards Agreement, although the government will be required to prevent foreign access and monitoring beyond the Additional Protocol.
