COVID Death Toll in Iran Surpasses 66,000

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s death toll from the coronavirus exceeded 66,000 as the number of new infected cases and hospital admissions is surging, the Health Ministry said Friday.

Providing the latest statistics on the coronavirus infection, the Health Ministry’s spokeswoman said on April 16 that the pandemic has claimed 328 lives over the past 24 hours, bringing the total death toll in Iran to 66,008.

The total number of people tested positive for COVID-19 in the country has surpassed 2,194,100 after the detection of 25,261 new cases since yesterday, Sima Lari added.

More than 1,761,400 patients have recovered from the coronavirus infection so far or have been discharged from hospitals across Iran, she noted.

Among those undergoing treatment at present, 4,652 are being kept in the Intensive Care Units of medical centers because of critical health conditions, Lari said.

The spokeswoman noted that more than 14.16 million coronavirus diagnostic tests have been carried out in Iran so far.

She also said 372,362 people have received the first dose of coronavirus vaccine in Iran so far, less than 0.5 percent of the population.

The number of people infected with COVID-19 across the world has surpassed 139 million and the death toll has exceeded 2.99 million.
