Iran Registers 79 Coronavirus Deaths over Past 24 Hours

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Health Ministry reported 3,839 new cases of COVID-19 and 79 virus-related deaths on Thursday, as some 620 more people have been hospitalized over the past 24 hours.

Today’s update brings the total number of confirmed COVID cases in Iran to 6,125,596, including 129,988 deaths.

The ministry noted that 5,901,532 patients infected with coronavirus have recovered or been discharged from hospitals, while around 3,310 COVID-19 patients have been reported to be in critical condition or intensive care units.

It said more than 57,867,860 people have been administered with one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, with 47,608,297 individuals having received both doses while 1,145,493 people have also received the third shot as a booster.

While the Delta variant of the coronavirus remains the dominant variant globally, the World Health Organization designates Omicron a "variant of concern."

In a technical brief released this week, WHO noted that the variant poses a "very high" global risk. The variant was first identified by scientists in South Africa, and now has been detected in at least 24 countries around the world.

Reported COVID-19 cases around the world rose an alarming 33% last month as variants and sparse access to vaccination in some regions fueled the surge.

Global case counts hovered around 3 million per week through most of October, then started rising in November and surpassed 4 million last week, according to Johns Hopkins University data.
