New Round of Iran-Saudi Talks on Agenda

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A fresh round of negotiations between Iran and Saudi Arabia is going to be held in Iraq, the spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry announced on Monday.

In comments at a press conference, Saeed Khatibzadeh said Iraq is going to host the next round of talks between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

He said the exact date and more details will be made public as soon as they are finalized.

In spite of all existing differences, Tehran has tried to proceed with negotiations with Riyadh in an effort to establish sustainable relations between the two countries for the good of the region and considering the mutual expediency, he added.

“The subjects of disagreement would be discussed in due course,” Khatibzadeh stated.

Diplomatic relations between Tehran and Riyadh soured following the January 2016 execution of Shiite cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr, an outspoken critic of the Saudi monarchy, in Saudi Arabia. Riyadh cut ties with Tehran afterwards, responding to attacks by angry protesters on its embassy in the Iranian capital.

Saudi Arabia’s military campaign against Yemen as well as the death of hundreds of Iranian Hajj pilgrims in a deadly crush in Saudi Arabia’s Mina in September 2015 had prepared the ground for the deterioration of tensions between Tehran and Riyadh.
