Iran Urges Political Settlement of Ukraine Tensions

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Iranian Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson said Tehran is monitoring the situation in a heated standoff over Ukraine, calling for political and diplomatic approaches to defuse the tensions.

Commenting on the recent tensions between Russia and the Western governments over Ukraine, Saeed Khatibzadeh said at a press conference on Monday that Iran is monitoring the developments in Ukraine carefully and closely.

“Naturally, we’ve tried to hold our own consultations with the parties involved in the matter,” he noted.

Khatibzadeh underlined that the solution that Iran proposes for any regional tension is “dialogue and political and diplomatic solution.”

He expressed hope for the de-escalation of tensions in Ukraine.

The US and Russia have sought to relieve tensions over Ukraine during high-level talks in Geneva, but reported no breakthroughs as a result of the discussions.

Meanwhile, the US has sent the first shipment of its $200m security support package for Ukraine.

Russia has routinely denied it is planning an attack on Ukraine, insisting that it has the right to move its troops on its own territory as it sees fit.

Moscow has also put the blame for the deteriorating security situation in the region on the US, its Western allies and NATO.
