Ukraine Crisis Has Political Solution: Iranian FM

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Reiterating the need for the political settlement of crisis in Ukraine, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian expressed Tehran’s opposition to wars anywhere in the world.

Speaking at a joint press conference with his Polish counterpart Zbigniew Rau in Tehran on Sunday, Amirabdollahian said they have held important negotiations about the latest regional and international developments, including the Ukraine crisis.

“We are opposed to the war in Ukraine, in the same way that we oppose wars in Yemen, Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq and every part of the world,” the top Iranian diplomat added.

“We believe that the solution in Ukraine is political, and the political negotiations between Ukraine and Russia must result in an immediate end to the war and the establishment of a ceasefire in that country,” he stated.

He also praised Poland for providing humanitarian assistance for the displaced Ukrainian people and for helping in the evacuation of Iranian nationals from Ukraine.

Hailing the age-old relations between Iran and Poland as a major asset, Amirabdollahian said Tehran and Warsaw share views about the necessity of convening the Joint Economic Commission.

He also unveiled plans to hold a fresh meeting of Iran-Poland Joint Political Committee at the level of deputy ministers and director generals within the next three months.

Pointing to the positive and constructive ideas proposed by the Polish foreign minister for the promotion of parliamentary diplomacy, Amirabdollahian said the head of the Iran-Poland parliamentary friendship group is going to visit Warsaw with a delegation.

For his part, Zbigniew said Poland considers the war in Ukraine a result of violence.

Ukraine is a sovereign state and has the right to self-defense under international law, the Polish minister added.

On the Vienna talks about the revival of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and lifting the sanctions on Iran, Zbigniew said Poland will try to expand economic cooperation with Iran after the conclusion of the Vienna negotiations.

He also expressed hope that Poland and Iran would sign more agreements during his Iranian counterpart’s visit to Warsaw in the future.
