Iran to Play Wales in A Must-Win Game: World Cup

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Wales and Iran will lock horns in Group B fixture at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium on Friday aware that victory could take them a pivotal step towards qualification for the World Cup knockout stages.

Iran lost to England 6-2 on Monday and Wales came from behind to earn a deserved share of the spoils against the US later in the day.

Carlos Quieroz's side is looking a shadow of the team that had previously collected a win and a draw from Uruguay and Senegal in September.

Mehdi Taremi's double highlighted his threat in the attack, and a substitute outing from Sardar Azmoun after injury will only encourage Iran ahead of this contest.

Despite the presence of the aforementioned duo, Iran has not netted more than twice in a game in nine attempts, something which is ideally required as it looks to reduce its negative difference.

Iran goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand was forced to leave the field after suffering a nose injury and Queiroz tries to field the player.

Iran has not qualified for the World Cup’s next stage so far and a loss against Wales will destroy its dream in Doha.
