Double Amputee Fatally Shot by Police in California

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A recent shooting death of a double-amputee man in a wheelchair has raised questions about the use of excessive force by police in Southern California.

On Thursday, Huntington Park Police Department officers responded to a stabbing and found the victim with serious injuries. The victim described the attacker as a Black man in a wheelchair with a butcher knife, who fled the scene, according to CNN.

During the search, police located the suspect a few blocks away holding the knife, who reportedly ignored officer commands and threatened to advance or throw the knife. Despite the use of two Tasers, the suspect continued to threaten officers with the knife, leading to an officer-involved shooting, according to the police statement. The suspect was pronounced dead on scene from gunshot wounds.

The incident is under investigation by the Huntington Park Police Department, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, with the involved officers placed on paid administrative leave.

Family members identified the man as 36-year-old Anthony Lowe, who they describe as a loving, caring father. Bystander videos of the incident appear to show the confrontation between police and Lowe just before the shooting. The family and community members are calling for charges against the involved officers and seeking justice for Lowe. The family is awaiting autopsy results and an independent review by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office.

The California Attorney General's office stated that it is not investigating the matter at this time.
