Iran Loses to Australia at U-20 AFC Asian Cup

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran lost to Australia 3-2 in Group B of the U-20 AFC Asian Cup Uzbekistan 2023 on Saturday.

The win means Australia is back in the race for a quarterfinals spot after losing to Vietnam 1-0 in its opener.

Iran’s defeat means the team will have to do it the hard way after failing to build on its victory against Qatar.

Aidan Simmons gave the Australian team a lead just eight minutes into the match.

Adrian Segecic made it 2-0 from a free-kick into the bottom left corner, with Iran keeper Adib Zarei left with no chance in the 19th minute.

Iran reduced the deficit in the 25th minute with Amir Reza Eslamtalab finishing off Mersad Seifi’s cross from the left flank.

Just one minute into the second half, Segecic scored Australia’s third goal.

With 10 minutes remaining, off Alireza Enayatzadeh pulled a goal back for Iran.

Australia will meet Qatar on Tuesday, while Iran face Vietnam.
