Video Shows Man Violently Held Down by Police in Kansas City Walmart

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Police in Kansas City, US state of Kansas, are currently investigating an incident captured on video showing a man being held down by multiple officers in a Walmart superstore on Thursday.

The man's uncle, Christopher Enloe, who posted the video on TikTok, stated that his nephew had entered the store to purchase food for their family. According to Enloe, his nephew was accused of stealing pizza and was subsequently tackled by the officers.

The Kansas City Kansas Police Department has confirmed that they are reviewing the incident to determine if the three officers involved acted in compliance with department policies.

Authorities have clarified that the review of the incident had commenced prior to the video being shared online. The video, recorded by Enloe and verified by NBC News, has gained attention on social media platforms.

Enloe explained that he had contacted his 24-year-old nephew to bring him some gas after his vehicle broke down in front of the Walmart. Enloe stated that when his nephew left, he realized that the vehicle still wouldn't start and asked his nephew to return with jumper cables. Meanwhile, his nephew entered the store to get food while Enloe waited for his vehicle to start.

According to Enloe, less than 10 minutes later, a woman approached his car and informed him that his nephew was being tackled by officers. Enloe shared that his nephew had claimed a police officer asked for a receipt of his purchase, and after confirming that he had one, he continued to walk away. Individuals present at the scene, as heard in the video, can be heard telling the officers that the man had a receipt and had been in line paying alongside them.

Enloe's nephew relayed to him that an officer ran up, grabbed him by the neck, and threw him into a vending machine, as recounted by Enloe. The video depicts the interaction after the nephew is already on the ground and being restrained by an officer. Another officer approaches and tries to place the nephew's hands behind his back, appearing to kneel on the nephew's neck, as shown in the video.

According to the video, Enloe can be heard instructing the man on the ground, who is yelling at the officers, to "stop" and comply with them.

Enloe maintains his nephew's innocence and asserts that the police lacked sufficient justification for their actions. He expressed, "As far as the police force goes, we’re looked at as guilty and we have to prove our innocence before they have to prove our guilt."

In a statement, the police department ensured that the officers would be "held accountable based on the outcome of the investigation." They further added, "THE KCKPD expects all officers to follow all policies, procedures and the law when interacting with the public."

Walmart has refrained from providing any comments until the police release their report on the incident.

At present, police have not responded immediately to a request for information regarding potential charges.
