IAEA Report Reaffirms Iran’s Compliance with JCPOA: Diplomat

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Reza Najafi said the UN nuclear agency’s latest report has for the eleventh time reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

The IAEA’s new report, which is the eleventh one since the implementation day of the JCPOA and the tenth quarterly report to the (IAEA) Board of Governors on verification of the JCPOA implementation, once again confirms that Iran’s nuclear measures and activities are fully in compliance with the JCPOA, Najafi said on Thursday.

Pointing to the details of the IAEA’s report on Iran, the ambassador said a footnote of the report states that the US president on May 8 declared the country’s withdrawal from the JCPOA.

He added that its text is similar to the previous reports and the only changes relate to technical figures, like a planned increase in the stockpile of heavy water and the enriched uranium.

In a speech from the White House on May 8, US President Donald Trump accused Iran of sponsoring terrorism and seeking nukes before announcing the US withdrawal from the 2015 agreement between Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).

Following the controversial decision, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Iran weighs plans to remain in the agreement with the other five parties, provided that they ensure full benefits for Iran.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei has underlined that any decision to keep the deal running without the US should be conditional on “practical guarantees” from the three European parties to the JCPOA.

The JCPOA was reached in July 2015 and came into force in January 2016.

Since the historic deal was signed in Vienna, the IAEA has repeatedly confirmed the Islamic Republic’s compliance with its commitments under the JCPOA, but some other parties, especially the US, have failed to live up to their undertakings.
