Iran Discusses Syria Developments with China, Russia, Germany

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A ranking Iranian diplomat held meetings with representatives of China, Russia and Germany to discuss the latest developments in Syria, including the formation of a long-awaited constitutional committee in the Arab country.

Hossein Jaberi Ansari, a senior assistant to Iran’s foreign minister in special political affairs, held separate talks on Syria with delegations from China, Russia, and Germany in Tehran on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Iranian diplomat discussed the latest developments in Syria and the region in his meetings with Chinese Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs Chen Xiaodong, Russian president’s special envoy for Syria Alexander Lavrentiev, and German foreign ministry’s director‑general for political affairs Philipp Ackermann.

In the gatherings, various issues related to the Syria crisis were discussed, including the formation of the country’s constitutional committee, fight against terrorism, prevention of a humanitarian disaster in Idlib, reconstruction of the war-hit nation, and return of displaced Syrians to their homeland.

The diplomats also agreed to continue such bilateral negotiations in the near future, IFP reported.

Syria was gripped by a civil war in March 2011, which turned later into a large-scale foreign-backed militancy involving various terrorist groups.

Iran and Russia have remained close allies of Syria and supported its legitimate government in the face of terrorist groups like Daesh (ISIL or ISIS).

The Syrian army and its allies defeated Daesh in 2017 after years of war.

In the meantime, political efforts are underway to settle the outstanding conflicts in the Arab country.

Iran, Russia and Turkey have launched a peace initiative known as the Astana process to end the war in Syria.
