Afghan Presidential Candidates Threaten to Boycott Upcoming Polls
KABUL (Tasnim) – A number of Afghan presidential candidates threatened that they would boycott the upcoming polls in the country unless the government accepts their demands.
According to Tasnim dispatches, the Council of Presidential Candidates, in a statement, called for Ashraf Ghani’s withdrawal from power due to the end of the Afghan government's legal tenure after June.
The council accused the Afghan president of using government facilities and attempts to engineer the country’s presidential election.
In the statement, the Afghan candidates also called for the formation of a caretaker government before holding the presidential polls.
It said if the abuse of government facilities and law-breaking behavior by Ashraf Ghani continue, the council may boycott the presidential vote.
The election is scheduled to be held in September.
It was originally scheduled for April 20, but the Independent Election Commission announced on December 26, 2018 that they would be postponed until July20 in order to resolve problems that became apparent during the October 2018 parliamentary elections.
On March 20, 2019, the IEC once again delayed the election, this time by two months from July 20 to September 28.
