Iran’s Kabul Embassy Denies Reports of Afghan Election Results Stance

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Embassy in Kabul rejected reports that the country’s envoy, Bahador Aminian, has announced a stance on the election results in the neighboring country.

In a statement, the Embassy said there has been no stances or comments made by the Iranian embassy on the recent announcement of the presidential election outcome in Afghanistan.

Earlier, some Afghan media outlets had claimed that Aminian had welcomed the results and called for formation of an inclusive government in Afghanistan.

The Afghan Independent Election Commission on Tuesday declared the election results of Afghanistan’s September 2019 presidential election.

The winner was announced to be the incumbent Afghan president, Mohammad Ashraf Ghani. The announcement drew mixed reactions. Ghani praised the efforts of the election commission regarding the declaration of election results.

However, Ghani’s main rival, Abdullah Abdullah rejected the election results, accusing the election body of working in favor of the incumbent president. He also vowed to form what he called an inclusive government soon.

Nearly two million Afghans cast their ballots last year amid a record number of Taliban attacks intended to undermine the election. In the meantime, the Taliban militant group said in a statement that the election results contradict the content of the peace process.

The declaration of the Afghan presidential election results has created further tensions as Abdullah seems to be serious in wanting to form his own government. In such circumstances, the country will most possibly experience another power sharing crisis that will affect the lives of Afghans.
