Obama: Americans Should Be 'Troubled' by Attempts to Overturn States' Votes

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Former US President Barack Obama said in an interview that Americans should be “troubled” by Republican attempts to overturn the results of the presidential election in key states.

“Look, Joe Biden’s going to be the next president of the United States. Kamala Harris will be the next vice president,” Obama told MSNBC contributor Jonathan Capehart Thursday.

“I have been troubled, like I think every American, whether you’re a Democrat, a Republican or an independent, should be troubled, when you start having attempts to block, negate, overturn the people’s vote when there’s no actual evidence that there was anything illegal or fraudulent taking place.

“They’ve been repeatedly rejected by the courts,” Obama added. “I’m less surprised by Donald Trump doing this; he has shown only a flimsy relationship to the truth. I’m more troubled that you’re seeing a lot of Republican officials go along with it, not because they actually believe it but because they’re intimidated by it.”

The Trump campaign has mounted a series of long-shot legal challenges to the results of the 2020 election and in some states is seeking to outright overturn President-elect Joe Biden’s victories.

The campaign is also reportedly seeking to pressure Republican state lawmakers to appoint pro-Trump electors, with the president inviting several leading Michigan Republicans to the White House this week.
