Renowned Iranian Film Director, Wife Found Fatally Stabbed at Home

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Prominent Iranian film director Dariush Mehrjui and his wife were tragically found dead in their home after being fatally stabbed.

Their daughter, Mona Mehrjui, reported the grim discovery to the police emergency center around 11:00 PM on Saturday. The couple resided in a suburb located approximately 30 kilometers (19 miles) west of Tehran, the capital.

Hossein Fazeli, a judiciary official, confirmed that both Mehrjui and his wife, Vahideh Mohammadifar, were found lifeless with knife wounds to their necks. The investigative team arrived to find a chaotic and disturbing scene; Mehrjui displayed neck and head injuries, while his wife's death appeared to result from strangulation, with no initial signs of defensive wounds on either body.

Authorities have launched an investigation into this tragic incident, refraining from speculating on any possible motives. It's worth noting that the wife had previously voiced concerns about a knife threat on social media in recent weeks.

The bodies of Mehrjui and his wife have been transported to the forensic medicine department for a more detailed examination, as criminal detectives from Alborz Province Police continue their investigations.

Mehrjui, aged 83, was renowned as a co-founder of Iran's film new wave during the early 1970s, primarily emphasizing realism in his work. He received numerous accolades throughout his career, including a Silver Hugo at the Chicago International Film Festival in 1998 and a Golden Seashell at the San Sebastián International Film Festival in 1993. Additionally, Mehrjui pursued his cinematic education in the early 1960s within the cinema program at the University of California, Los Angeles.
