Police Geared Up for Iran Elections
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The spokesman for the Law Enforcement Command of the Islamic Republic of Iran said around 190,000 Police forces have been tasked with ensuring the security of the upcoming nationwide elections on March 1.
As the responsibility for the security of elections in Iran legally lies with the Police, a total of 190,000 Police forces will be protecting security on the election day on March 1 in cooperation with the other security organizations, such as the Basij (voluntary) units, General Saeed Montazeralmahdi said.
He also noted that the Police, defined by the law as one of the five authorities verifying the competence of the candidates, has screened the backgrounds of 48,000 applicants in the first step and 24,000 others in the final stage at the request of the Constitutional Council.
In comments on Monday, Iran’s Prosecutor General Mohammad Movahedi Azad said no election-related crime has been reported so far.
There have been a few cases of wrongdoing in the virtual space that have been all settled after warnings, he added.
The parliamentary and Assembly of Experts elections in Iran will be held on coming Friday.
There are currently 290 seats in the Iranian Parliament, known as Majlis, elected by direct vote of people in nationwide elections for four years.
The Assembly of Experts is a high-ranking body that elects and oversees the activities of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution.
Members of the assembly are directly elected to office by people for an eight-year term. It holds biannual meetings to appoint a new chairman.
