Iran Partakes in New Round of Astana Talks for Syria Peace
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – An Iranian delegation took part in the 16th round of talks about establishing peace in Syria under a format known as the Astana initiative, held in Kazakhstan’s capital Nur-Sultan.
The new round of Astana talks in Nur-Sultan will conclude on Thursday.
Delegations from Syria, the Syrian opposition, the guarantor states, namely Iran, Russia, and Turkey, as well as the observer countries of Iraq and Lebanon have participated in the talks.
On the first day of the summit on Wednesday, the Iranian delegation, headed by Ali Asghar Khaji, the senior adviser to Iran’s Foreign Minister on special political affairs, held talks with the delegations of Syria, Russia, and Turkey and Geir O. Pedersen, the United Nations Special Envoy for Syria.
The main topics discussed in the meetings included the most important efforts in the field of political stability in Syria, holding the country's presidential elections, trying to hold the sixth meeting of the Constitutional Committee in Geneva, the issue of border crossings, US sanctions against Syria, and the issue of detainees, according to the Iranian Foreign Ministry’s website.
Meanwhile, the delegation of Iran expressed its positions on the fight against terrorism, humanitarian aids, and the continuation of US sanctions against Syria.
