Ending Sanctions Main Focus of Vienna Talks: Iranian Spokesman

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The focus of the upcoming round of Vienna talks on the revival of the 2015 nuclear deal will be the full termination of the unilateral and illegal sanctions that the US has imposed on Iran, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Saeed Khatibzadeh said.

“The focus (of nuclear talks) in Vienna is the removal, all at once and effectively, of the JCPOA-related sanctions and those imposed (on Iran by the US) after Trump’s withdrawal from the JCPOA,” Khatibzadeh said at a press conference on Monday.

He said Iran and the P4+1 have set a date for the resumption of the JCPOA talks after Tehran came to the conclusion that the negotiations must continue about the removal of the sanctions.

“Our focus in Vienna will be the termination of all sanctions that have been unilaterally and illegally imposed by the US against Iran,” the spokesman stated.

The request and intention of the US to rejoin the JCPOA parties have been heard, but what is important is to make sure that the sanctions will be lifted and to receive the necessary guarantees of the verifiable removal of the sanctions, he added.

A new round of talks to revive the JCPOA began in Vienna in April between Iran and the remaining members of the nuclear deal, namely the UK, France, Russia and China plus Germany.

There was a hiatus in the nuclear talks after the new Iranian administration took office in August.

The US left the JCPOA in 2018 and restored the economic sanctions that the accord had lifted. Tehran retaliated with remedial nuclear measures that it is entitled to take under the JCPOA’s Paragraph 36.

The current negotiations examine the potential of revitalization of the nuclear deal and the US’ likely return to it.
