Iran Urges IAEA Not to Veer Away from Technical Issues

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry advised the International Atomic Energy Agency to remain in the course of technical cooperation with Tehran without being influenced by political pressures from outsiders.

Asked about IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi’s forthcoming visit to Tehran, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Saeed Khatibzadeh told reporters at a press conference on Monday that Iran has always tried to maintain its relations with the UN nuclear agency within the framework of the IAEA’s procedures.

“We hope this trip would be also constructive like the previous visits,” Khatibzadeh added.

“We have always advised the (International Atomic Energy) Agency to stay in the course of technical cooperation and not allow certain countries to advance their political inclinations and intentions in the name of the Agency. Naturally, we will make the necessary decision in line with the developments and according to the circumstances,” the Iranian spokesman stated.

He said Grossi will arrive in Tehran on Monday night according to plans arranged beforehand, noting that Iran has defined the agenda of the visit.

“Of course there are issues between Iran and the Agency. We have always tried to address those issues within the technical framework, and have also asked the Agency within the same framework to keep the work going,” he explained.

Khatibzadeh said the IAEA is aware that the acts of sabotage and terrorist activities targeting Iran’s nuclear sites have remarkably affected the technical aspects of cooperation between Tehran and the UN nuclear agency.

Iran has repeatedly warned the UN nuclear agency that adopting politically-tainted stances and issuing biased reports on Iran will undermine the constructive process of cooperation.
