Iran Renews Call for Political Solution to Yemen Crisis

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A senior adviser to the Iranian foreign minister for special political affairs stressed that the crisis in Yemen needs to be resolved politically, urging a complete removal of the siege of the country.

Ali Asghar Khaji had a video conference with UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg on Tuesday.

In the online meeting, the two sides discussed the latest developments in Yemen, the ceasefire, and ways to forge cooperation between the parties to the conflict in the Arab country.

Khaji emphasized Iran’s constant positive role in the efforts to achieve peace in Yemen through political solution, which especially includes a complete removal of the siege of the Yemeni people.

The UN envoy, for his part, expressed satisfaction with Iran’s constructive efforts toward the resolution of the Yemen crisis, calling for the continuation of Tehran’s cooperation for the establishment of peace in Yemen.

Since March 2015, Saudi Arabia and some of its Arab allies have been carrying out deadly airstrikes against the Houthi Ansarullah movement in an attempt to restore power to fugitive former president Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh.

The war has killed tens of thousands of people, mostly civilians, and resulted in what the UN has described as the world's worst humanitarian crisis.
