Iran Ready for A ‘Good, Strong’ Agreement on JCPOA Revival: Top Diplomat

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran is still prepared for concluding a good agreement on the revival of the 2015 nuclear deal with world countries, Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian told the European Union's foreign policy chief Josep Borrell.

"The Islamic Republic is ready for conclusion of a good, strong, and durable agreement," the top diplomat told Borell during a phone call on Wednesday.

"We have relayed our opinion to the American side through the European Union, with a constructive and forward-looking approach."

Former US president Donald Trump unilaterally left the nuclear deal that is officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), in May 2018 and re-imposed the anti-Iran sanctions that the deal had lifted. He placed additional sanctions on Iran under other pretexts not related to the nuclear case as part of his "maximum pressure" campaign.

Addressing Iran's ongoing collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Amirabdollahian also said the Islamic Republic was working with the United Nations' nuclear agency towards realization of "an agreement over good and strong cooperation" between the two sides.

Speaking alongside his visiting Syrian counterpart Faisal al-Mekdad in Tehran earlier in the day, Amirabdollahian had said that an Iranian delegation was set to visit Vienna to hold talks with the IAEA's officials on the remaining technical issues related to Tehran’s nuclear program. "We will dispatch an Iranian delegation to Vienna in the coming days” to start talks and strengthen cooperation with the IAEA officials, he had added.

Borrell, for his part, said, "We will continue our constructive efforts until arrival at the point of a final agreement," adding that the EU was "optimistic" about eventual realization of this prospect.

He also evaluated Iran and the IAEA's ongoing cooperation as a "forward step".
