Big Turnout in Turkey Elections A Victory for Democracy: Iranian Spokesman
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry hailed the high turnout in Sunday’s elections in Turkey as a victory for democracy in the neighboring state.
In a statement on Monday, Nasser Kanaani said the high turnout of voters in the presidential and parliamentary elections in the Republic of Turkey and the successful voting attested to the victory for democracy in the neighboring Muslim country.
The Iranian spokesman also congratulated the Turkish people, organizers of elections, leaders and political parties on such a victory and wished them the best.
Nearly 89 percent of more than 64 million eligible voters in Turkey cast their ballots in the general elections on Sunday to elect a president and parliament for a five-year term.
A run-off vote is looking likely as the count continues after polls closed in the presidential elections.
Turkey's Supreme Election Council said President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is on 49.49% of the vote, with his rival Kemal Kilicdaroglu on 44.79%, with nearly all the votes counted.
