TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The foreign minister of Iran hailed the BRICS group as a suitable platform for the promotion of cooperation between Tehran and New Delhi.

BRICS provides a perfect framework for the expansion of Iran’s cooperation with India, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian said in a meeting with his Indian counterpart Subrahmanyam Jaishankar on the sidelines of the BRICS meeting in South Africa on Friday.

Highlighting Iran’s great economic capacities, Amirabdollahian said Iran’s membership in BRICS will strengthen the group’s position and develop its economic potential, hoping that mechanisms for the membership of the Friends of BRICS would be determined and implemented immediately.

He also called for plans to broaden the economic, trade, investment, scientific and technological cooperation between Tehran and New Delhi, stressing the need to strengthen relations between the private sectors of the two nations.

The Indian foreign minister, for his part, emphasized the necessity for the removal of obstacles to economic and trade cooperation between India and Iran.

The two senior diplomats also discussed plans for cooperation between the two states in various fields, such as the Chabahar port in southeast Iran, agriculture, transportation, energy industry, financial affairs and consular issues.
