Syrian President, Bahraini FM Confer on Expanding Bilateral Ties
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Bahrain's Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, held discussions in Damascus, focusing on enhancing bilateral relations across various sectors.
Syria's state news agency, SANA, disclosed on Sunday that Assad and Al Zayani convened to exchange perspectives on the ties between Damascus and Manama, emphasizing the imperative of fortifying them for mutual benefit.
This marks the inaugural visit by a Bahraini foreign minister to Syria in nearly 13 years.
Additionally, they reviewed the preparations for the upcoming 33rd summit of the League of Arab States, slated for May 16 in Bahrain's capital, with an emphasis on augmenting Arab nations' capacities to confront regional and international challenges.
“Bilateral relations between the two countries and ways to develop them in various fields to serve the interests of the two countries and the two brotherly peoples were discussed, in addition to the preparations and efforts being made by the Kingdom of Bahrain to make the Arab summit scheduled for next month a success,” SANA said.
Assad underscored the importance of bolstering Arab solidarity and collaborative efforts to foster regional stability amid global developments and incidents.
Earlier in the day, Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad held talks with his Bahraini counterpart and delegation, deliberating on deepening ties between their nations.
The Arab League suspended Syria's membership, one of its founding states, in November 2011 at the onset of externally-supported insurgency within the country, a move Syria deemed “unlawful and a breach of the organization's charter.”
Last year in May, Syria was reinstated into the 22-member intergovernmental Arab League, despite US threats, with 13 member states voting in favor of the decision during a session in Cairo, Egypt.
