Syria Intensifies Security Measures Ahead of Presidential Elections

DAMASCUS (Tasnim) – The Syrian government has stepped up security measures around the country in the run-up to the presidential elections, reports suggested.

According to Tasnim dispatches, the Syrian government has taken tight security measures to maintain law and order ahead of the presidential votes, to be held on Tuesday.

The government forces have added to the number of the security posts in different areas to restrain terrorists from entering the county’s central regions and prevent any act of sabotage in the voting process.

In the meantime, the Syrians are enthusiastically taking part in election campaigns conducted by the three hopefuls running for the president.

The streets in Damascus are decorated with campaign posters, most of all with President Bashar al-Assad’s pictures, Tasnim reporter said.

Syria’s presidential election is slated for June 3 with three candidates standing for the presidency, namely incumbent president Bashar al-Assad, Maher Abdel Hafiz Hajjar and Hassan Abdullah al-Nuri.

Earlier on Wednesday, Syrian expatriates cast their ballots in the Syrian embassies in 43 different countries. The turnout stood at over 95 percent.

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. Terrorists from many countries have flocked into the crisis-torn country to topple President Assad’s legitimate government.
